Consume 7.4 Pairs of Shoes
Annually (or 3) and Save the Planet!
A Raison D'être
We, at CIRQULAR, love fashion. We love shopping. We love retail therapy. That feeling you get when you unbox the perfect pair of designer shoes is just euphoric. It might sound ridiculous that, in 2018, each person in the UK consumed on average 7.4 pairs of shoes, but we totally get it –to many of us, fashion is a raison d’être. WE. LOVE. FASHION. However there's no getting around the fact that the fashion industry emits more greenhouse gases than the aviation and shipping industry together.
The Facts of Fast Fashion
10% of global carbon emissions are accounted for by the manufacturing, production and transportation of fashion. The factories are powered by coal, the dirtiest kind of energy. The commonly used synthetic fabrics are made from fossil fuels. Garments release about 1900 microfibers every time you wash them, making their way into our oceans. Untreated toxic wastes from textile factories are dumped into rivers containing mercury and arsenic which is extremely harmful to aquatic life. Every year, thousands of hectares of ancient forests are cut down to make room for trees used for rayon, viscose and modal. This threatens indigenous communities, animals and plants. It takes 7500 liters of water to produce 1 pair of jeans, at the same time, over 750 million people in the world do not have access to drinking water. And it is not enough to switch to natural materials such as cotton, when the heavy use of chemicals in farming causes diseases and premature deaths of farmers, as well as massive soil degradation and freshwater pollution.
There is No Common Definition of Sustainable Fashion
The facts of fast fashion have made us think about our consumption habits, the unacceptable working conditions they facilitate, the over-usage of land and water, and the threat to our eco-systems. We need alternative solutions to feed our fashion hunger in sustainable ways. But there are difficulties in finding a common definition of what sustainable fashion really is. And, no matter how green or organic those 7.4 pair of shoes á year are, we are still bringing in 14.8 more shoes into the world. So how can we still get our hands on 7.4 pairs (OK, hold your horses, maybe aim at 3) of shoes every year, and, at the same time, let them roam the streets for their whole product life cycle until they truly are worn out? We have the answer.
