The Art of Closet Cleaning

If you are reading this blogpost there is a great chance you buy a lot of clothes. We all do. And there is no shame in that, because we buy most of them secondhand, right? (If no, read here why you must join the circular economy, NOW plz) However, to extend the lives of our garments and free up space for new pre-loved items a little closet cleaning now and then is of great need! Following are our best tips.

A quick estimation

How much clothes are we talking? Before you start out, have a quick look to evaluate how much time it is going to take. We do not want to start the process if we do not have time to finish it. Then we will just end up disappointed and with an even messier situation than before we started. Make sure you have enough time. If not, then go by type, do a trouser day, a shoe day etcetera.

Get some boxes or bags

Cirqular is not for everything. Before you start sorting your stuff make sure that you have some empty boxes for the premium items you want to resell at Cirqular, a box for nostalgia (more on that in the next section) and some bags for the things that you are good-hearted enough to donate to help organizations.

Channel your inner Marie Kondo

The life-changing Magic of Tidying Up. The book by Japanese cleaning expert Marie Kondo makes closet cleaning a breeze. The lesson is simple, yet life changing; Keep the things that spark joy in your life and get rid of those who don’t. Keep this as your mantra. This leaves us with two main categories and two sub-categories.

1️⃣ Things that spark joy in your life…
👖 …and you wear more than once a month

It can be those perfect basic jeans, your comfiest heels or the Acne pants your broke the bank for. If you wear them often, it is simple - they are keepers!
👘…and you never wear
But hey, some things never see daylight and still make our hearts flutter. That kimono you bought for a themed party and had so much fun in or the stripper shoes you bought for your 18th birthday. Of course you are not going to get rid of those memories. But, they do not belong in your wardrobe, put them in a box and mark “nostalgia”, you will be happy in 50, 25 and even 5 years when you go through your basement storage on a rainy day.

2️⃣ Things that don’t spark joy in your life…
👗…and are of premium quality

Many premium garments come with unique design. Sometimes so unique that we do not wear them more than a couple of times, either because we do not want to appear repetitive in our style or because we simply get tired more quickly of unique items. For whatever reason, these will still be new to potential buyers in the CIRQULAR shop! Basics are potential items in this category too! A classic that does not spark your joy anymore may bring happiness to another basic-lover.
2️⃣ Things that don’t spark joy in your life…
👚…and are worn out or budget quality
You don’t love them and they are either too un-stylish or worn-out for someone to pay good money for them. Find a retailer that takes care of old textiles (sometimes you even get a discount as thanks), a textile recycling station or donate to a help organization. Do not throw in the trash.

Enjoy it

See this as an exploration of your style. You are exploring the deepest valleys and highest pile tops of your closet; you are probably going to find some forgotten treasures and loyal old friends. It is an adventure, so enjoy it. Why not make a cocktail (or mocktail) while you’re at it? And, listen to this Spotify playlist.
